Restoring Historic Charm to a 126-Year-Old Landmark

Steeped in local history, this 126-year-old home in Annesdale Park was in desperate need of an
exterior refresh. Over more than a century, exposure to the elements had left the original siding worn and vulnerable. The homeowner wanted to preserve the home’s historic character while upgrading its protection and curb appeal for the modern era.

Uncompromising Craftsmanship for Historic Preservation

To honor the home’s rich architectural heritage, the Bluff City Exteriors team went to work carefully replacing the outdated siding with premium, low-maintenance James Hardie board. To complete the transformation, we applied a layer of brilliant green paint that makes the property pop against the historic neighborhood landscape, along with a full new gutter system to protect the foundation for decades to come.

A Seamless Transformation Built to Last

By pairing James Hardie’s weather-resistant technology with precision installation, Bluff City Exteriors delivered a bold, beautiful transformation that respects the past while ensuring low-maintenance durability far into the future.

This was a unique project for us in many aspects, but most of it was due to the fact that it was built in 1900. This part of Memphis has many historical homes and several homeowners over the years have worked very hard to preserve them. About 75% of this house was covered in vinyl siding and much of it was in disrepair. When we removed the vinyl siding, we saw that it was attached to the original wood siding, which was coming apart in many places. That wood siding was attached to some old pieces of wood that were crumbling in our hands. And there was no insulation in place.

We used a smooth- textured 8″ James Hardie siding, and then replaced the soffit, fascia and frieze around the house to all James Hardie products as well.

We worked with the homeowner, as well as a color consultant to, to try and find a paint color that was historically accurate. While several colors were used, the green siding stands out the most, which was the beautiful “Oak Moss” by Sherwin Williams. We also revived the porch floor, railings and ceilings, which were in need of repair. We were able to revive this home back to it’s former glory and help beautify an historic neighborhood for future generations.

The Client’s Experience

We met with four companies to bid on installing Hardie board to replace 1980’s vinyl siding, rotted wood, and do exterior painting on our 1900 Midtown home, and chose Bluff City Exteriors based on their detailed proposal and thorough answers to our follow up questions. We are so glad we chose Bluff City Exteriors.

BCE’s attention to detail was excellent. We met before on site before the project began to discuss what to expect during the phases of the work, such as hours and days the team was on site. When they found unexpected problems, they were quick to let us know, including how to remedy the problem and the additional cost before taking action. They custom-matched rotted porch rails during repairs, and carefully preserved architectural details like the fish scale shingles on the front gable. The flashing where the new Hardie siding meets our stone base presented a challenge and they came up with a creative solution that looks fantastic.

They also handled minor interior plaster repairs that came up along the way. The crew cleaned up and hauled away debris daily, stayed on schedule, and knocked out punch list items quickly. Highly recommend them for anyone with an older home.
